Sweet red bean soup with rice cakes called "Oshiruko" is a local specialty of Kyoto, all hand-made by Japanese confectionary craftsman. It is a traditional Japanese confectionery which red beans are cooked with sugar and added mochi, rice flour dumplings, or sweet-boiled chestnuts into a red bean soup. In Kyoto, "kaichu jiruko" which is ready-to-eat oshiruko with hot water poured in powered soup, has been famous for a long period of time. The sophisticated "Oshiruko" which melts in your mouth, is great not only as a snack and served with tea, but also recommended as a souvenir.
